The film, directed by Kabir Khan and released on 23 November of 2003, features a number of well received production values. The Kal Ho Naa Ho is largely seen as a commercial triumph for both the director and the film's stars Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan. This film is the second highest grossing Bollywood movie in India with a total of US$337 million worldwide. In addition to being critically acclaimed for its humor and heartwarming story, it also became an international blockbuster at the box office with total revenue from outside India making up 80% of its revenues globally. The film tells the story of Chulbul (Salman Khan), an over-enthusiastic, under-educated retired soldier who has decided to marry a woman named Suman (Katrina Kaif) who he is in love with since childhood. Although Chulbul has lived all his life in poverty with his mother (Shabana Azmi) and brothers (Aziz Ansari and Ali Fazal), they are constantly mocked by the rest of their village for their working class family. After receiving a telegram from his brother that his mother has died, Chulbul goes to his village for the funeral. Chulbul meets his childhood friend, Shekhar (Aamir Khan), and they form a band and start working in a local village fair. While working one day at the fair, Dum (Salman Khan) and his nephew Pappu (Zayed Khan) rob the money while dancing on a wheel; while this goes unnoticed, Chulbu steals their clothes before fleeing from the scene. On his way home, Chulbul is stopped by Madhu (Katrina Kaif), an urban woman who was married to his childhood friend Shekhar. Madhu's husband Shraddha (Hema Malini) also tries her luck with Chulbul but he is unimpressed and leaves. After wrestling with his emotions over Suman, Chulbul takes Madhu on a drive. Madhu falls for Chulbul's big hearted personality, but he belittles her. Chulbul then performs at the village fair to raise the money that was stolen by Dum and Pappu. Her father, who is present at the fair, leaves in disgust when he realises that Suman will go against their family's wishes in marrying Chulbu due to his status as a poor man. Shraddha's sacrifice in offering her own wedding jewellery does not make up for this lack of status in Suman's eyes either. Chulbul then goes on to win a contest that was held as a ruse by his friends to throw him a surprise party. Shraddha arrives with all of Suman's relatives and they force Suman to go back with them, but she refuses and runs away with Chulbul. Ultimately, the courts rule in favour of Chulbul and Suman after Chulbul gives a moving public speech about how he considers his mother's love more valuable than gold. He also mentions how his happiness cannot be bought even though he is living in poverty. In the end, he just wants someone who can love him for who he is. cfa1e77820
